Throughout my undergraduate career I have been fortunate enough to use social media both academic and applied settings. These are a few projects that I've spent a good deal of time and energy on.

Social Media Projects

Has Macy’s stamped its name on the holiday season? Does it matter if they did? A three-week review of their social media presence answers these questions and raises a few more.

This report includes a comprehensive list of Macy’s active social media accounts, analyses of their ranking on social media measurement tools as compared to a main competitor, and recommended improvements to the Macy’s social media strategy.

On November 11, 2011, a group of Penn State students decided that the scandal that infected their school had to serve as a call to action. That night One Heart was born.

One Heart has been one of the most exhausting and rewarding experiences of my undergraduate career. As founding Public Relations Director I relied upon social media to connect with organizations and activists in the Child Abuse Prevention field, communicate with Penn State students, faculty, and alumni, and establish One Heart's relationship as a student-organization mature enough to handle the heartbreaking cause it fights for.

This seven page assignment, a social media strategy developed for a hypothetical State College, Pennsylvania business, is the culmination of several weeks of extensive study on social media Public Relations practices.

The report includes analyses of the company’s target audience and local competition, social media platform descriptions and recommendations, example posts, a timeline for the implementation of the strategy, and useful social media accounts to follow.

In my Honors thesis I examine the role of social media in K-12 children's learning and practicing of literacy tools. Rather than limit the thesis to a traditional academic paper, it seemed stunningly appropriate to illustrate the thesis through social and multimedia tools, such as Prezi, Storify, and online graphic novels.

A collection of these materials will be available on Tumblr as they develop. This project is a work in progress and due to be completed in April 2013. It will be presented in the 2013 National Association of African American Studies and Associates Conference in Baton Rouge. It is being completed under the guidance of Dr. Mya Poe.
